The impact of advocacy

Though there is some quantitative data about the impact of advocacy in general and a wealth of qualitative anecdotal evidence about the positive impact of advocacy on the lives of people with ID, there is still very little evidence-based research showing the potential impact of advocacy for people with ID during times of loss and bereavement. The case studies in this chapter indicate that people with ID are ready and willing to share their thoughts and experiences. Read (2011, p.537) explains how ‘loss can be disempowering for anyone; but for people with [an ID] loss can be totally disempowering and often overwhelming’. Dennison and Mee (2011) demonstrate how people with ID are empowered by telling their own story. Advocacy can play a huge role within this particular context, promoting opportunities for empowering conversations and self-determined solutions by people with ID. More research working in co-production with people with ID is needed to fully explore the potential positive impact of advocacy during times of loss and bereavement and to ensure the voices of people with ID remain at the centre of empowering, person-centred research.
